  • New £63,000 cycleway in Skelmersdale is approved

    Henry James

A NEW £63,000 cycleway making it “quicker and safer” for Skelmersdale residents to get to and from work on their bike has been approved.

The scheme was agreed by the county council's cabinet on Thursday, March 8.

A new path will link the residential areas north of Railway Road, with the employment area of Gladden Place.

The council has said cyclists will be able to make the journey “much quicker” on the new, shorter route. Council officials added that the cycleway will also be “much safer” as people will no longer have to cycle along main roads.

    Encourage

County Councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The new cycleway will encourage more people to travel to work and back on their bike.

“Cycling on busy roads can be daunting and put many people off, but the new path will be much safer with no need to cycle through busy traffic.

A safe crossing point will be installed on Railway Road at the only point in the route where people have to cross the road.

“The cycleway surface will also make it easier for people to ride safely.

“We want to encourage more people to get out on their bikes to improve fitness and cut the amount of cars on the county's roads and cycling schemes like this are a key part of our plans.”

Work on the scheme is scheduled to begin in September 2018 and the project should be completed in December 2018.

The first part of the scheme will involve creating a new cycletrack from the Westgate/Waldron junction south to Railway Road through the verge areas.

The second part involves converting the footpath on the south side of Railway Rd to Gladden Place into a cycle path and installing the new crossing point and signage on Railway Road.
