Southport's Flower Show blossomed into a big event when it attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the town, the event's organisers have said this week.
David Jackson, chief executive of the show, held last weekend in Victoria Park, told The Champion that sunny weather last Sunday (August 22) helped draw in visitors to another hugely successful show, which he said was a wonderful event rich in warmth, atmosphere and beauty.
“This year's show has been as good as it has ever been,” he said.
“We have been fortunate enough to have mostly good weather across the weekend, and we are expecting very positive results when visitor numbers are confirmed.”
The event, held between August 19 and 22, was opened by actress Suranne Jones, best known for her role as Karen McDonald in Coronation Street, who said she enjoyed the show and picked up plenty of tips from the host of horticultaral experts on hand at the show.
“I had a great time at the show,” she said.
“It looked fantastic and there was such a good atmosphere. I learnt so much from all the experts too, I can't wait to try their tips out.
Among the new attractions for this year's show was The Food Village, which allowed visitors to try delicacies from across the north west and further afield, but as usual it was the dazzling floral displays which impressed the many visitors to the show.
The Grand Floral Marquee burst at its brim with exquisite displays. The Brockhouse for best-in-show went to the stunning garden designed by Sefton MBC.
”I go to a lot of shows, and this is the best of them all,“ said Professor Stefan Buczacki, one of the show's patrons.
”Southport is now setting its own standard.“
