  • Sefton athletes take medals at National Special Olympics

    Henry James

TEN members of Southport & Formby Special Athletes squad were part of a team representing the North West at the recent National Special Olympics Summer Games in Sheffield.

A total of 2,600 athletes with intellectual disabilities competed at the event.

The opening ceremony was held in heavy rain at Sheffield United FC’s ground, Bramall Lane, where, after the customary march in, they were entertained by singer Tony Hadley and there was also welcoming speeches by Special Olympics GB ambassadors Jim Carter of Downton Abbey fame, Suzi Perry and Chris Kamara.

Despite the very wet start the Sefton athletes’ enthusiasm wasn’t dampened as the competition began. Between them they won one gold, three silver and five bronze medals in 7-a-side football, badminton, boccia and table tennis.

Claire, who won silver and bronze medals in boccia, said: “It was good fun to be part of a big team and fantastic to win two medals.”

If you are interested in joining Southport & Formby Special Athletes or helping in any way, regular training is on Sunday mornings at Southport College Sports Hall, Mornington Road.
