  • Volunteers needed for society’s befriending scheme

    Danielle Thompson

THE Alzheimer’s Society is holding a drop-in volunteer recruitment event in Southport next week to encourage more Sefton residents to volunteer with the charity.

The event is being held at Lady ‘B’ Tea Shop on Tuesday, October 17 from 11am-3pm.

There are over 4,000 people living with dementia in the Sefton area, and the society is looking for volunteers to support the various activity groups such as its flagship ‘Singing for the Brain’ memory cafes and its befriending scheme.

The befriending scheme matches people living with dementia to volunteers based on shared interests and hobbies. Volunteers can commit as little or as much time as they wish each week, and are supported by local staff with training provided where necessary.

Elaine Killey, befriending manager in Southport said: “We’re always looking for new volunteers to come on board with us here in Sefton in order to give as much support as we can to local people living with dementia and their carers.

“Our current volunteers can vouch for the support, advice and guidance we provide to them as we recognise the important role they can play in the lives of many people.

“The information event we’re holding is an informal drop-in event for members of the public to come and find out about the different types of volunteering you can get involved in.

“Both staff and some of our current volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have in order to help you decide if volunteering with us is for you or not.”
