  • Blank canvas for youngsters

A COMPETITION is being held to offer youngsters the chance to transform the side of a 31ft truck.

The ‘Transform My Truck’ competition is being run by the Transport Training Academy, which hopes to raise awareness of the career opportunities available in the industry and to help dispel stereotypes and myths.

A report by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) in November last year revealed that the LGV driver shortage has risen sharply to 52,000, an increase of 49% since 2014, despite there being around 2.5million jobs available in the UK.

As part of the competition, children in Sefton are being called on to use their skills, knowledge and innovation to draw the different modes of transport used to send something from one location to another. Two winning designs will be chosen, one from age category 12 and under and another from 13 to 16.

The lucky winners will have their designs printed onto one side each of Transport Training Academy’s blank truck, win a £100 Amazon voucher and up to £500 grant for their school. Runner-up prizes of £50 Amazon vouchers and £300 school grants for second places and £30 Amazon vouchers and £200 school grants for third places, will also be given for each age category.

As part of the competition schools are being offered the chance to have one of TTA’s trucks visit them, and for pupils to take part in an interactive workshop where they can learn more about the logistics industry.

David Coupe from the Transport Training Academy said: “We hope that schools in Sefton will encourage their pupils to take part. At the moment our truck is a 31ft blank canvas on wheels and we can’t wait to see what creative ideas children entering the competition come up with.”

Rachael Scanlin from the Academy added: “The logistics industry is facing a major shortage of drivers, with numbers falling year-on-year. If the shortage isn’t addressed it will likely have a very harmful effect on the UK economy as a whole.”
