Our Big Ben's set for former glory
by Henry James

WORK has started on the restoration of Scarisbrick Hall’s clock tower which was the blueprint for Big Ben.

The second phase of the £7m repair work to the Grade I listed building started on Monday, March 7 and is funded by owners of the hall and English Heritage through a grant.

The 75ft clock tower was designed by the famous architect Agugustus Pugin who also worked on the Palace of Westminster.

Scarisbrick Hall, on English Heritage’s at Risk Register, following many years of neglect, is going through a full restoration.

Scarisbrick Hall is a 150 room mansion built between 1830-1860 by the Pugin who also worked on the Houses of Parliament's more famous Big Ben.

It is the home to Scarisbrick Hall School.

The hall has been described as the finest example of residential Gothic renaissance architecture in the county and is officially listed and protected as a building of special architectural interest.

Pugin’s works at Scarisbrick Hall include the Great Hall, principal staircase as well as the clock tower.

The hall stands within Scarisbrick Park, which is an extensive private estate protected by a preservation order.

Greg Aylmer, one of the owners, said: “Scarisbrick Hall is a building on the at risk register by the English Heritage so we really want to see it restored to its former glory.”
