Cafe beats the squeeze
by David Simister

A COMMUNITY cafe in Parbold is this week celebrating its first birthday - and you're invited to join the party!

Tim Cornah, chairman of Parbold Youth Club, told The Champion that the Pear Tree, on Station Road, is commemorating its first anniversary tomorrow (April 1) and that West Lancashire residents are more than welcome to come along and find out more.

“Despite the recession, it has managed to survive, thanks to loyal customers, dedicated staff, volunteers and help from local business people, the local churches and West Lancashire Young people’s Services,” he said.

“It is managed by the Third Way Community Interest Company, a not for profit social enterprise with the intention of trading to raise funds to pay for the youth club that occupies part of the building in which the Café resides. Given the current squeeze on funds for charities in the third sector, trading is one of the few remaining ways in which money can be raised regularly.”

The cafe was opened jointly by the Mayor of West Lancs Borough Council and Chairman of Parbold Parish Council in April 2010, and Mr Cornah said that although the cafe has had to deal with ongoing problems caused by the wider economic downturn, it has managed to survive and help locally-based charities in the process.

“The café is for everyone – not just the youth. Many people have thought it was just a youth club – no it isn’t ! Without your custom, the youth club and many other charitable ventures would cease to be. By spending money at the Pear Tree, you are helping to support many charitable ventures in our local community,” he added.

“Please come along and visit us – you will be made very welcome. Our food is locally sourced and lovingly prepared on the premises by our chefs. We offer a range of Vegetarian foods and are dedicated to delivering high quality, healthy food to eat in or even take away if you wish.”
