Work begins on Banks play area
by David Simister

A BANKS councillor has praised work on a new playground for the village's youngsters which began earlier this week.

David Vickers, borough councillor for North Meols, said that work for a new play area on Hesketh Lane started on Monday (March 28), which would be welcomed by the village's residents.

“This week work got under way in earnest on the Banks Park project. The first stage is the installation of a skate park designed by the youth of the village; this will be followed by the playground and landscaping. Phase three of the project will be dictated by the adults in the village and will include gardens of remembrance, flower beds etc. This will make the park a truly park for everyone in the village and will be owned by the village,” he said.

“Thanks should go to the working group, made up of Charles Evans, Cathy Marland and Jimmy O’Hare from the parish council and Sheila Bond and Sue Robertson from the residents’ group, who have worked hard to get the project to this stage. Both the local schools and young teens were also involved, with the working group, in the design and planning of the park.”

However the project was hit with a slight hitch last weekend when it was discovered that 20 young trees which had been donated by North Meols Parish Council for the playground had been damaged by vandals. However, the trees have now been replanted in the hope that they will grow at the new site.

The project has been funded by money provided to the borough council under the Section 106 agreement of the Town and Country Planning Act, which sees developers providing funding for community projects as a condition of them being given permission to build new developments nearby.
