A BURSCOUGH pub has been chosen as the best hostelry in West Lancashire by real ale drinkers.

The Hop Vine, on School Lane, has won an award from Southport and District Campaign for Real Ale and ithe pub will now go forward as its West Lancashire nomination for the national pub of the year award,.

Licensees Mike Julie McCoombe are in charge of this well run free house and a recent innovation is the opening of the Burscough Brewery in the rear courtyard under the stewardship of brewer Andy Brocken. House beers Priory Gold and Ringtail Bitter, named after local sites, are being brewed.

Mike Perkins, press officer for Southport and District CAMRA, said: “The Hop Vine is an excellent pub in the centre of Burscough, refurbished and transferred from its predecessor, the Royal Coaching House.

”It has a large central bar and min interior, with interesting separate side rooms. A range of five mainly local cask beers are served, often from Wigan and Burnley, with an excellent food menu.“

The organisation has also submitted an entry into the contest from the Southport area, which this year has been given to The Lakeside Inn, situated alongside the town's Marine Lake.

An official presentation will be made at the Hop Vine next Tuesday (April 12) at 8pm, and the nationwide winner of the pub of the year competition will be announced later this year.
