Farmers protest at fuel crime wave
by David Simister

FARMERS in Halsall and the surrounding areas hit by a recent spate of crimes spoke out at a police meeting held in Haskayne last night.

As this week's Champion went to press a number of Halsall residents got in touch to say that representatives of several farms, particularly in the Halsall area, were attending a Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting at Haskayne Village Hall last night (Tuesday, April 5) to raise their concerns about diesel fuel and agricultural equipment being stolen by crooks operating in the area.

“There have been hundreds of pounds' worth of diesel and equipment stolen from farms in this part of West Lancashire, with farmers being very seriously affected by what appears to be a wave of organised crime,” said Carr Moss Lane resident Nicola Pryce-Roberts.

“It appears to be quite organised, with thieves actually drilling into fuel tanks to steal diesel rather than just siphoning it off, and a lot of people are very angry about it.”

Last month The Champion reported that police have set up a Rural Watch scheme in the rural areas of West Lancashire in a bid to combat trespassing and poaching, which had been set up as a two-way scheme with Lancashire Constabulary and the farming community in response to an increase in agricultural crime.
