No work, no play
by Natasha Young

CHILDREN in Lydiate have been left without a public play area over the school holidays, as work to revamp the village's Coronation Park has allegedly been running weeks behind schedule.

Angry mum-of-two, Jackie Stewart, said she has been having to drive around two-and-a-half miles to next nearest Meadows play area, to keep her seven-year-old son Matthew and five-year-old daughter Lucy occupied.

The Ridgeway Drive resident told The Champion that a Lydiate Parish Council revamp is currently underway at the park to replace the outdoor play equipment, meaning the site is out of bounds to visitors, and claimed: “It was meant to take two to three weeks for the job but now they are in the ninth week of work.

”The've started the park so they need to finish it.

Mrs Stewart, who said she has been “getting nagged” by her children as they want to go and play and also usually socialise with school friends in the play area, said: “We're in the park every single day and now we're having to get in the car and go to other parks.

”They can't go there as often and last week they couldn't get on anything as there were so many people there.“

Mrs Stewart said she has sent several emails to the parish council's clerk, Brian Bevan, to find out what the delay is and received just one reply suggesting ”poor weather and poor drainage“ was the problem.

She added: ”My argument is that it was the dryest March since 1953, so I sent them an email in the middle of last week saying ‘what's your excuse?' and got no reply.“

Mr Bevan was unavailable to comment as The Champion went to press.
