Personal attentionis top priority for care home residents
by Henry James

AT a time of increasing legislation, Springhill Care Group surveyed its residents at its Birch Green care home in Skelmersdale to see what they valued the most.

Residents at the care home said the most important service they received was the personal attention from staff.

The group had developed its own questionnaire to ask residents what they thought were the most important aspects of the service.

Some 43% put the personal care as the most important feature of life in the Ivydale, Birch Green, home.

The Springhill Survey looked at key features of care home services to rank those elements of the service from the residents’ perspective.

Birch Green Care Home provides accommodation for 74 people with services including respite care, nursing care and care for dementia sufferers.

Residents ranked the independence to arrange their own day as second on the list of their priorities, with 21% of the residents highlighting it.

Other priorities ranked by residents in their order of preference included a clean home which is litter free, and a range of activities to mix with other residents.

Catherine Shawarby, general manager at Birch Green Care Home, said: “We take pride in listening to our residents to ascertain what is important to them, and how they want their care and support provided. Some of the comments were very touching.

”Our commitment to personalising our services gives each person a say in how they want their service delivered. We wanted to do something different with this survey, by asking them to rank the elements of the service they receive in the order that they consider most important to them as individuals.

“We will be following up this survey with a further questionnaire to see how far we are delivering what residents see as important to them.”
