Morris dancers lead the way at village Disney fair
by Henry James

DISNEY is the theme of this year’s Newburgh Fair so expect to see Little Mermaids and Princesses, Buzz Lightyear and Mickey Mouse around the village on Saturday, June 11.

The parade starts at midday from Back Lane and will be led by Newburgh Morris, celebrating their twentieth anniversary this year.

“We started the team for Newburgh Fair in response to a challenge,” said Rebecca Richardson, team leader. “None of the team had done any north west Morris dancing before and it was a great achievement to join the procession in 1991 – and surprise the village. ”We’ve danced at the fair every year since then – and now of course we go to lots of similar events nearby and further away.“

Field entertainment on the day includes the Kirsty Moss School of Dance, Tug of War, Maypole and Morris Dancing, The marquee hosts the popular craft and flower show, and there will be plenty of stalls and games lining the field.

The marquee is hosting other events during Fair Week. On Wednesday, June 8 Douglas Valley Lions hold an Abba Tribute Night – tickets from Ron on 07739802777.

Thursday is Ladies’ Night and on Friday Newburgh’s Got Talent – very local entertainment – so popular it’s ticket only. Saturday evening’s Mad Hatter’s Ball tickets are selling fast. Contact Hazel on 01257 463239 or 07801427856 for tickets or further information.

And on Sunday at 10.30am the closing marquee event is Songs of Praise – all are welcome to celebrate a much loved village tradition.
