Scarisbrick youngster to represent Britain in international hockey event
by David Simister

A WEST Lancashire youngster is to help represent his country when he jets off to Los Angeles for an international hockey event.

14-year-old Jake Higham, of Scarisbrick, will be heading out with Team GB on June 30 to take part in the AAU Junior Olympics in its inline hockey events, which starts this year in the Californian metropolis on July 3.

He told The Champion:

“I've always wanted to play for Team GB, so it's an event I'm really looking forward to.

”Ever since a hockey player came into our school and taught us about field hockey, I've been really interested in hockey. It's something I really enjoy.“

The Burscough Priory Science College student will be playing as part of the British Inline Puck Hockey Association's Under 14s squad at the event, which will see him playing against teams from around the world in the prestigious event, which he was invited to take part in after attending trials in Sheffield and Bisley in November last year.

However it isn't the first time he's taken part in an international tournament, and was part of the only British team to take part in the Hong Kong Inline Cup in 2008, while at home he is a goalie for both the Rotherham-based Inline Dragons and the Blackburn Hawks ice hockey team.

Mum Gina, who says Jake ”eats, sleeps and breathes hockey“, told The Champion she was very proud of her son and is looking forward to seeing him playing at his best during the event in Los Angeles.

”I'm really proud of Jake, particularly as he's worked so hard to get this stage,“ he said.

”Jake trains very hard - usually at least two or three times a week, so this is something he really deserves.“

Jake flies out to the USA on June 30, as part of a trip which has been entirely self-funded. If you'd like to act as a sponsor for Jake send an email to ginahigham@tiscali.co.uk.
