Dancers head grand parade
by Henry James

NEWBURGH Morris - celebrating their 20th anniversary - led this year’s Newburgh Fair parade on Saturday.

The morris dancers were followed by a host of Disney characters in keeping with the theme of this year's colourful parade through the village.

It was the climax of Fair Week with the village having hosted a string of succesful events including a children's ball organised by Newburgh C of E Primary School, an Abba Tribute Night by Douglas Valley Lions, a Ladies’ Night with singer Dave Masson and a Newburgh Got Talent night.

Field entertainment on the Saturday included the Kirsty Moss School of Dance, tug of war, maypole and morris dancing. Organisers said there was a “very successful” craft show with every child from the school producing an exhibit, plus plants, cookery, photography, drawings and paintings.

The Southport brewery made a special bitter for the fair called Newburgh Dream.

On Saturday evening was a Mad Hatters’ Ball and on Sunday morning there was a Songs of Praise event in the marquee.

Rebecca Richardson, from the Newburgh Fair committee, said: “The whole village joined in the activities during the week. Everyone supports the week and enjoys it. We also had good weather on the Saturday. An awful lot of hard work goes into organising the fair, but it is worth it.”
