Family hits the stage in Her Benny
by Natasha Young

A FAMILY of four Birkdale actors are getting set to hit the stage in the hit Merseyside musical, ‘Her Benny' this summer.

Parents Mark and Val Warren, along with 13-year-old Birkdale High student David and 10-year-old James - a pupil at Farnborough Road Junior School - are currently being put through their paces during intensive rehearsals, as the show gets set to open in Wirral next month for its first tour of the North West.

And the Carrwood Park family are no strangers to the stage, having previously appeared in productions of the ‘Mikado’ and ‘Scrooge’, as well as several other ABD shows.

With the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, The Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl and the Civic Hall in Ellesmere Port being lined up to host the show, writer and director Anne Dalton said: “It's really quite unique to have a family of four all singing, dancing and acting together on stage. They are an incredibly experienced family who portray the drama, humour and emotion that goes hand in hand with ‘Benny’.

”It's an incredible coincidence too that Val and Mark appear as husband and wife- ‘Jack and Betha Bates’- in the production, and their eldest son David, as ‘Benny Bates’, their child in the musical. James plays the role of Victorian street kid ‘Spider’.“

The show also stars local radio presenter and television personality Johnny Kennedy in the lead role of Joe Wragg, operatic star Julie Davitt as Sally Wragg, and BBC Radio Merseyside’s Andy Mac brings a good dose of scouse grit and humour to Her Benny as one of the lively prostitutes off the docks. Radio presenter and well known Birkdale resident, Neil Newton will take up the role of the criminal Jazzer.

Her Benny is at the Floral Pavilion New Brighton from August 17-20. To book tickets call the box office on 0151 666 0000 or log onto www.floralpavillion.com
