Fran misses out on medals
by Henry James

SOUTHPORT-BORN swimmer Fran Halsall just missed out on two medals at the World Championships in Shanghai.

At the Oriental Sports Centre she took fourth in the 50m freestyle final and the same position in the 100m freestyle.

In the 100m freestyle final, Halsall, who had picked up a silver in Rome two years ago, clocked 53.72 seconds and missed out on a medal by six-hundredths of a second. The Dutch swimmer Kromowidjojo took bronze with 53.66, with Dane Ottesen and Herasimenia of Belarus finishing with 53.45.

Halsall came behind Therese Alshammar, Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Marleen Veldhuis in the 50m final.

The Loughborough ITC athlete was frustrated with the result of the 100m freestyle, and admitted staying up late the night of the race working through her disappointment. But she was pleased with her progress since the angle surgery she had last December.

She said: “I put it into perspective.

”Looking at it from where I've been to where I've come in four months… in March the best I could manage was a 55.0 so I've dropped a second and a half.

“I've dropped seven kilograms in weight which in four months is a heck of a job.

”I'm disappointed in coming fourth, I guess you would be in any race, but it just shows good signs for the future.“

After the 50m freestyle final, Halsall commented: ”I think I've put my name in the hat for both events for next year's Olympics now.

“Maybe I also struggled with the expectation here, people thinking ‘Fran Halsall can win gold in this.'”
