Plan to reopen post office - but in the village hall
by David Simister

A CONSULTATION to reopen Halsall's post office, which closed earlier this year, has been launched this week.

Yesterday Post Office Ltd confirmed that it was launching public consultation on its proposal to open a new post office following the closure of the previous one on Summerwood Lane, which closed in February following the resignation of subpostmaster Rita Pryce.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Since the temporary closure we have been working to find an alternative way of providing Post Office services to our customers in the local community. Our priority is to safeguard Post Office services in the longer term and establishing this hosted service will enable us to restore access to Post Office products in Halsall.”

The new proposal is for a Halsall branch in the form of a Hosted Outreach service in the village hall in Halsall, which would be provided by the subpostmaster from Burscough Bridge Post Office on Monday and Thursday afternoons between 2pm and 5pm.

It is planned that the new post office would have the same range of services as the previous site, with customers still able to collect benefits in cash using either everyday banking services or a Post Office card account. It will also provide access for disabled residents, with facilities including an access ramp and an induction loop for hearing aid users.

During the public consultation Post Office Ltd said it welcomes feedback on any issues customers would like it to consider before a final decision is taken on the proposal. The consultation period closes on Tuesday, September 20 2011.

Submissions can be made during the consultation by post to Post Office Ltd, c/o National Consultation Team, PO Box 2060, Watford WD18 8ZW, via email to consultation@postoffice.co.uk, via the Customer Helpline: 08457 22 33 44 or Textphone 08457 22 33 55.
