Ormskirk and Westhead set for improved road safety
by David Simister

A WEST Lancashire councillor's calls for two busy roads to be made safer have been given the unanimous backing of a borough council committee.

Derby borough councillor Paul Greenall said that his plea for upgraded road safety features at both Wigan Road, in Westhead, and at the crossroads of Wigan Road, Moor Street, and Knowsley Road in Ormskirk had been unanimously approved by the borough council's overview and scrutiny commitee meeting last Thursday (September 22), paving the way for Lancashire County Council, the local authority responsible for both roads, to improve pedestrians' safety by installing the features.

“I am very grateful to the members of the Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee for their unanimous support in both of these issues and I now call upon Lancashire County Council to address both of these matters so that pedestrian road safety features in Derby Ward are improved,” he said.

“The A577 is a busy road, especially during rush hour and it is totally unacceptable that a village like Westhead, with its two pubs, village hall and school, does not have a pedestrian crossing.

Additionally, children from the village who attend Ormskirk School and who have to cross the A577 to get there, have nowhere safe to cross.

Indeed, a few years ago a child was ran over on this road on his way to Ormskirk School. However, despite my raising this issue with Lancashire County Council on many occasions, nothing has been done and the situation remains the same.

But it's time something was done.”

Cllr Greenall also said of the Wigan Road crossroads in Ormskirk, which also falls into the Derby ward he represents, said:

“For far too long, shoppers and other visitors to our town centre have taken their life in their hands when they cross the road at these busy junctions, as they do not allow time for people to cross.

”This is an issue I have raised with Lancashire County Council on many occasions but nothing has happened. But the situation is getting worse and something must be done.

“So again, I have asked West Lancashire Borough Council's Overview & Scrutiny Committee to consider this matter.”

The council's decision to support the road safety measures follows a longstanding campaign by Cllr Greenall to improve the sites, which included a petition from Westhead residents calling for improvements to road safety in the village as long ago as 2002.
