Care home joins the cafe culture
by David Simister

A CAFE with a difference aims to provide a cuppa cheer for residents of a care home.

Alsley Lodge cafe offers the usual drinks, snacks and friendly service - but it's “staff” comprises the senior citizens in the home.

The cafe has opened with the aim of giving the residents an active role while meeting family, friends and visitors.

Jeanette Vaill, manager of Alsley Lodge Residential Care Home at Rufford, said: “In recent years, there has been a lot of negative press about residential homes for the elderly which in the vast majority of cases is unjustified.

“This initiative will hopefully show visitors to the home and the community in general how well we look after our residents and how we encourage them to live full and meaningful lives.”

Rufford councillor Jane Houlgrave, whose late father was one of the home's residents, said: “The cafe has provided a great opportunity for residents and visitors to get together and socialise as well as dispelling some of the myths around homes for the elderly. This is an excellent example of good practice in caring for the elderly which I hope will be adopted elsewhere.

“I hope that the Rufford and Holmeswood community will support this initiative by popping in to the cafe for a chat and a cup of tea with the residents.”

The cafe will be open between 2.30pm until 4.30pm every Sunday afternoon serving a variety of drinks and snacks.
