Bogus callers warning
by Natasha Young

OLDER residents across Sefton have been targeted by suspected bogus callers in recent weeks, who gained or attempted to gain access to their homes.

Two incidents occured in the Birkdale and Ainsdale areas and one in Waterloo, with one report of a man and a woman supposedly from the council suggesting to the resident that they needed to look at the condition of the interior of the property.

According to Merseyside Police and Sefton Home Watch the other two incidents involved bogus callers who gave the same story on both occasions, and said they were fitting a washing machine in a property nearby and needed to check the water supply.

Residents are being urged to take crime prevention steps to help prevent further suspicious incidents, such as fitting spyholes on doors to check the callers and keeping doors and windows locked.

Householders should also make sure back windows and doors are secure before answering the door to unexpected callers, put chains on doors and check ID cards while keeping the door on the chain.

Most utility companies, such as gas, water and electricity suppliers, now operate a password scheme. Contact your suppliers and set up a unique password with each of them that you will remember.

When a representative calls, they will give you your unique password.

This means that you can be sure people at the door are who they say they are.

If you are in doubt, don't let them in.

Ask them to make an appointment to come back at another time.

Anyone with information regarding this or other crimes in the area area asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 709 6010 or you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
