Volunteers enjoy rubbish day out
by David Simister

VOLUNTEERS wrapped up warm last weekend when they met up in Lathom to tackle an ongoing litter problem along the the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Despite the bitterly cold conditions more than a dozen West Lancashire residents met up at the Ship Inn on Saturday (February 11) to take part in a litter-picking exercise along the Rufford branch of the historic waterway, following a series of complaints about the amount of rubbish dumped along the towpaths.

Organiser Karl Hamilton told The Champion: “We managed to fill up no less than 35 binbags with rubbish we'd found alongside the canal, so I think everybody involved did a really good job in clearing up the litter.

”It was a very cold day but I think even considering that the event went really well, with everybody very keen to keep the canal looking as clean and tidy as possible. In the end we didn't get all the way into Rufford, as originally planned, but that's only because there was so much rubbish we ran out of binbags in the end!“

Mr Hamilton said that the amount of dog waste which had been placed into tied-up plastic bags but then thrown into nearby bushes by their owners was something of particular concern, and urged anyone walking their dogs along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to either throw the waste into the bins provided along the towpath or to take it home with them and dispose of it accordingly.

The next litter picking event along the canal is planned to take place on Sunday, March 4, with more details to be announced in due course.
