Mark's award for knockout picture
by David Simister

A TALENTED photographer from Hesketh Bank has won a top award for taking the picture which helped unearth a scandal at an Amir Kahn boxing match.

Mark Robinson, of Ashbrook Close, won the award for the Sports News Picture of the Year at the Sports Journalism Awards in London last week, after a picture he took at one of Amir Kahn's matches last year helped back up the boxer's claims that a man was “interfering” with officials at the event.

“Although the photo wasn't part of the original story, when Amir tweeted about the man interfering I went back through the photos and found that image, and it went into all the nationals. It helped to drive the story for at least another ten days, and eventually led to Amir Kahn being granted a rematch.”

“I've won a few awards before but this is my first one for a good few years, and it's quite a big achievement if you're a freelance. It's great when so many newspapers use on your photographs and to be able to get recognition for a photo like that one. It's part of what makes being a photographer really rewarding.”

The picture helped to fuel claims that a man at the match allegedly tried to interfere with one of Kahn's matches with Lamont Peterson, and its exposure in the national media led to Kahn being granted a rematch with his rival due to take place in Las Vegas in May.

A spokesman for the Sports Journalism Association, which presented Mark with the prize at an awards ceremony in the capital last Monday, said: “The power of photo-journalism was on display with freelancer Mark Robinson’s picture, published by The Sun, from the controversial Amir Khan fight last year, which shows the ‘mystery man' apparently interfering with the judging process during the world title bout.”

Mr Robinson, a former Sun staff photographer, is now working on opening his own photography studio in Hesketh Bank. For more information about his work visit www.mdrphotography.co.uk
