Student's design to be used for estate artwork
by David Simister

A STUNNING sculpture designed by a Skelmersdale student will be used as a street artwork on one of the town's estates later this year.

Six students on West Lancashire College's Art and Design Course were challenged to create designs to be displayed in Little Digmoor by the borough's Council for Voluntary Services, and this week it was revealed that student Laura Foxcroft's entry has been chosen as the winner of the contest.

Joe Connolly, Art and Design tutor at the college, said: “The project has been great for the learners, they’re focused and motivated. They really want to see their designs come to life so this has introduced a competitive edge too.

”The team will now come together to ensure that the commissioned piece stays to brief and they will supervise the manufacturing process.“

The students submitted a range of designs but in the end it was Laura's innovative climbing frame design which impressed the judges, and work is now underway to transform the design from the current scale model into a full size, professionally manufactured artwork.

Throughout the competition the six students were given the chance to work alongside Shane Johnstone, a professional artist who specialises in public participation and engagement art.

”It’s been a pleasure to work with the students at the college,“ she said.

”I understand the development of building sculptures like this so I can ensure the designs are realistic and practical and this means I can support the learners throughout the process too.“

The sculpture will be installed in Little Digmoor towards the end of the year.
