McDonalds in drive thru plans for Bickerstaffe
by David Simister

FAST food chain McDonalds is the company seeking to open a new drive-thru restaurant at Bickerstaffe, it has been confirmed.

The company has now submitted a detailed application to West Lancashire Borough Council under its own name after previously using an agency for a general planning application.

n May this year The Champion exclusively revealed that McDonalds was thought to be behind a planning application to open a new restaurant and drive-thru facility at the currently closed site on Skelmersdale Road, which was previousl a Little Chef.

Although the identity of the firm was not revealed at the time, it emerged that the applicant behind the plans had been linked to numerous other McDonalds sites across the country.

Following that original application for a change of use, approved by West Lancashire Borough Council in July, more detailed planning applications seeking permission for advertising signs have now been submitted by McDonalds.

In addition, site plans for the restaurant submitted to the borough council now prominently feature the golden ‘M' symbol used as McDonalds' logo.

The Champion has approached McDonalds on several occasions for a comment on the Bickerstaffe site but has never confirmed or denied whether it had any plans to open a restaurant there. The fast food outlet already operates restaurants in nearby Skelmersdale, adjacent to the Concourse Shopping Centre, and at the Two Saints retail park in Ormskirk.

Little Chef closed its restaurant at the site, which is on the main Ormskirk to St Helens road and close to the M58, in January this year after the troubled chain announced it would be closing 67 sites nationwide in response to the weak economy.

Do you think a McDonalds restaurant would be a bonus for Bickerstaffe? Let us know what you think by sending an email to david.simister@champnews.com or call The Champion on 01704 392404.
