Sub postmaster Paul delivers a timely solution to parking problems
by Natasha Young

PARKING restrictions in Birkdale Village are being lifted from one hour to two, following a successful campaign by a local trader.

Last year Birkdale Post Office’s sub postmaster, Paul Sealey, launched petitions claiming traffic wardens were being “overzealous” and also suggested one hour of parking wasn’t enough for visitors to make the most of businesses in the village such as restaurants and beauticians as well as the shops.

The campaign for longer stay parking then gathered momentum with support from Birkdale ward councillor Simon Shaw, who carried out a survey of to find out whether there would be support for two hour parking, and the matter was discussed by Southport’s Area Committee in July.

Now months later Sefton Council has confirmed that two hour parking restrictions will be put in place in the village, and will take effect once new signage has been put up.

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “Having received no objections to these proposals, we have now been able to change the traffic order allowing motorists to park for up to two hours.

”New signs have just been ordered and we hope to have these in place in the next couple of weeks.“

Mr Sealey, who said that the issue of the area being ”aggressively policed“ by parking wardens has already improved, welcomed the latest development for himself and other village businesses.

He told the Champion: ”We’re pleased that this is going through now.

“Coming up to the Christmas period it’s going to be an improvement for us all.”

Mr Sealey also praised Cllr Shaw’s work on the issue, and added: “I’d like to express my thanks to him and he’s helped along the way.”

Cllr Shaw said: “Paul Sealey has done a great job in pushing for easier parking in the Village.

”Local councillors carried out a comprehensive survey of traders and found 80% support for the move to two hour parking.

“Birkdale Village has an excellent selection of coffee shops, wine bars and restaurants, as well as a great variety of shops. That's why it is really good news that people will now have more time to enjoy our thriving village atmosphere.”
