Eco centre offers slice of Good Life
by David Simister

WEST Lancashire residents looking for a bit of The Good Life will get the chance as part of a charity allotment project.

Lancashire MIND will use bulk of the 22-acre site at the Red Apple Nursery in Newburgh to help people with mental health issues, but 36 allotments will be made available to the public.

A MIND spokesperson said: “With allotment waiting lists still at an all-time high, West Lancashire residents who are keen to ”grow their own“ will be delighted by news of a proposed major new allotment site.

”Lancashire MIND, which hosts and leads a partnership with Red Apple Community Trust, LCFT and Lancashire County Council, is developing the former Red Apple Nursery site to provide eco therapy for people with mental health issues, and is setting aside part of their 22 acres to create 36 new allotment plots for the general public.

“As well as providing eco therapy, the Eco Centre will be run as a commercial nursery and there are plans to develop a fruit garden, orchard, a place for nut trees and a cafe.”

The charity added that the site will be run by an independent allotment society, and that allotment holders will also automatically become members of the adjacent Eco Centre, giving them discounts on its range of plants, horticultural supplies and produce.

Both the West Lancashire Allotment Federation and the West Lancashire Community Food Growing Project have also lent their support to the scheme.

A meeting to discuss the scheme will be held at the Red Lion, Ash Brow, on Monday, November 12, starting at 7.30pm and residents will be given the chance to register an interest in owning an allotment at the site and taking part in a steering group overseeing the project.
