Game of kings is great for check mates
by David Simister

YOUNGSTERS at one Aughton school are getting to grips with one of the world's oldest games as it enjoys a surge in popularity.

Chess classes at Aughton St Michael's Primary School, on Delph Park Lane, are going from strength to strength.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Chess, the game of kings, is making a comeback but at Aughton St Michael's it never went away.

”The school is extremely proud of its chess club which has been run by Year Six teacher Ian Hughes for 15 years. The club is held during lunchtimes and after school with regular Saturday coaching by Steve Lamb from Lancashire Chess, assisted by two former pupils Rachel and Natalie Cass both of whom are England Junior Internationals.“

The school added that the board game was not only something which pupils enjoyed, but that it helps to build their confidence, sportsmanship and their strategy skills at the same time.

The club has also entered a series of tournaments organised by Lancashire Chess, which has seen pupils Rachel Cass winning £1,000 as one of the country's top young players, while Lauren Cornwell picked up £155 in prize money after defeating her rivals.
