Green shoots of recovery spring up at garden site
by David Simister

GREEN-FINGERED residents of West Lancashire village are looking forward to the opening of a new community garden next week.

Residents in Hesketh Bank have teamed up with Hesketh-with-Becconsall Parish Council and Lancashire County Council to create New Shoots, a one-acre garden in the middle of the Poor Marshes allotment site. With construction work at the site now complete keen gardeners are being urged to help with a huge planting project ahead of the area hosting its first event in June.

Viv Aldred, chair of New Shoots Management Committee, said: “We are very excited to be getting this wonderful new community facility and we hope that lots of local people will get involved. The construction work is now virtually complete and we are about to embark on a huge planting scheme.

”We have already had offers of help from the local high school, youth club and scouts and we would also like to involve lots of families and anyone who lives alone and might like to come to a friendly place where they can meet other people.“

The redevelopment of the site has been funded by the parish council and The Lancashire Environmental Fund, with Lancashire County Council managing the project. It is planned that after the planting at the site the area will be used as a venue for the first time when Mikron, a travelling theatre company, stage ‘Beyond the Veil’, a play about bee keeping, on the evening of June 7.

Planting days for the whole community will begin during half term week with the first two sessions planned for Tuesday, February 19, and Wednesday, February 20 between 11am and 2pm, with refreshments provided for volunteers.

Anyone wishing to get involved should go to on the Poor Marsh car park on Shore Road opposite All Saints School or telephone the New Shoots Secretary, Chris Derby on 07754 395142 for more information.
