Concert strikes the right note with young music lovers
by Henry James

INTERNATIONAL concert pianist, Noriko Ogawa performed A Children's Corner concert for 200 primary school pupils from four West Lancashire schools.

Youngsters from Our Lady and All Saints RC School, Parbold, Newburgh School, Richard Durning’s School, Hilldale and the Maharishi School, Skelmersdale took part in the event on Friday, May 3 in Parbold Village Hall.

This free concert, which had been fully booked for months, was sponsored by The Rainford Trust and Parbold-based Douglas Music.

The programme included popular works by Debussy, Chopin, Mozart and also Beethoven’s theme and variations on the British National Anthem.

The children were clustered close to the piano and each group in turn was invited to stand close to Noriko and the piano to observe the process of music making.

Michael Bonsall, from Douglas Music, said: “The concert was a great success and the children and teachers were exhilarated by the whole experience of hearing Noriko talk about and play the music.”

Meanwhile Douglas Music's Concert Grand Piano Appeal has now received grants from the borough council, Lancashire County Council and Arts Council England towards its Steinway Project. The group needs to replace their piano with a instrument worthy of the calibre of performers they are attracting.

The project is now within a few thousand pounds of becoming a reality. Potential donors will find more details at www.parbolddouglasmusic.org
