Sniper targets village church
by Tom Martin

A church in Thornton has been targeted by a sniper who has broken a number of windows using a high-powered air rifle.

St William of York Church, on Edge Lane, has been subject to costly damage due to the attack and there have been calls to find those responsible.

It was revealed by Manor Ward Labour Councillor, Steve McGinnity, who has spoken of his shock at the incident.

He said: “Just what is going through the heads of these yobs? Firing at a church really is a new low.

”Not only is this costing the church a lot of money to replace the windows, but it is extremely dangerous.

“These pellets could cause serious injury to anyone who is unfortunate enough to be hit by one and falling shards from a broken window could cause even more harm to anyone who is unlucky enough to be underneath.

”The yobs who are firing these guns need to be aware, if they aren't already, of the damage they could cause.

“And we need to do everything we can to catch the culprits before they do any more damage, or God forbid, hurt someone.”

“Those behind these attacks need to know that when they are caught, they will face very serious consequences.

”Fire arms of any description are not acceptable and we all have a duty to ensure that they are not on our streets.“

Anyone with any information about the incident can contact Crosby Neighbourhood Police on 0151 709 6010 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
