A NEW community group wants to mark their arrival by staging a carnival in Seaforth in tribute to heroic soldiers who served in the First World War.

The Friends of Bowersdale Park, has been set up as an official charity in January, have ambitious plans to stage the fun day in August – but they first need to raise the money to pay for it.

It will involve a stage being placed in the park with live musical entertainment and there is also an idea to name a tree in memory of a soldier.

In the build-up to the carnival, the volunteers will have to organise a number of fundraisers to try and raise cash to pay for the event.

One of the members, Jenny Conlin, said: “Our aim is to maintain the local park and bridge the gap in the community and get Seaforth back to the way it was.

”We are fed up of yobs in the park, litter on the floor and we felt there was a need for a community group to address these issues.

“We hope that this carnival will bridge the gap between old and young. It promises to be a fantastic day but first we need to put on some mini-events before August so we can get the funds to stage it.”

The group meet up every Thursday to discuss problems such as dog fouling and they try to introduce measures to improve the area.

August will mark the 100th anniversary since the First World War first broke out and volunteers want to provide their own tribute.

Jenny added: “We want to get a performance trailer so singers and dancers can provide some entertainment at the carnival. ”The tree idea was something we wanted to do in order to remember a heroic soldier from the First World War.

“It will be a nice tribute and the tree will be planted at the Bowersdale Park so people can visit it and learn something about history.”

Friends of Bowersdale Park will hold an indoor table top sale on Sunday, March 16 at the Bowersdale Centre, on Crescent Road. It will take place between 10am-1pm. It costs £5 to hire a table and for more information contact 07535 463 952.
