Scouts scoop award for their efforts
by Tom Martin

BOOTLE scouts who were given the chance to get creative in making their own lights display have scooped an award for their efforts.

Atlantis Explorers, based on Captains Lane, took part in The Feast of the Lanterns which involves other groups from across Merseyside competing in a number of different arts and crafts categories held over a weekend stay at a local campsite.

The youngsters, aged between 14-18, impressed judges in the ‘Explorer’ category and took home the top award. It is the second year in a row that they have triumphed in this category.

The Feast of the Lanterns is one of the main highlights in Merseyside Scout’s yearly calendar, providing an opportunity for Scouts and Explorers to get creative in making their own display of lights and colour.

The camp, which is held during the second weekend in October each year, involves groups arriving at the camp site where they are met with an envelope containing their particular area of the site where they will be based for the two day stay.

There is also a theme which they need to consider when creating their display, with this year being the Disney's ‘The Lion King'.

They are then left with a number of tools and materials to create their lights display during the Saturday. Judges then view the groups during the day on the Saturday to get an idea of the amount of work and effort that has been put into each display.

The real judging then starts after the last minute rush to get the displays lit on Saturday evening when darkness falls. Each display is judged by a panel and points are given based on creativity, hard work, ingenuity and originality. The displays are then also open to other scouts, leaders, parents to come to the site to take a walk around.

Leader of Atlantis Explorers, Sandy Fairlie, said: “This is an absolutely brilliant achievement. The boys and girls worked very hard over the weekend to make their display and the award is fully deserved”.

Atlantis Explorers meet up on a Wednesday night between 7-9pm at its base on Captains Lane and anyone looking to get involved are welcome to attend.
