Anti-smoking group teams up with foodbanks
by Tom Martin

AN anti-smoking group has teamed up with foodbanks in Bootle and Netherton to help out vulnerable residents in the local community.

SUPPORT, Sefton’s NHS Stop Smoking Service, is now registered with the Trussell Trust and staff have been issued with food vouchers for all of their Stop Smoking Clinics in order to enable the team to refer local people to nearby foodbanks for further support and advice.

Clients who are issued with a voucher by a health professional can then take it to a local foodbank centre where it can be exchanged for three days supply of emergency food.

Colette Kearney, Team Leader for SUPPORT said: “We have also teamed up with South Sefton Foodbank to offer on-the-spot advice about stopping smoking to anyone visiting the foodbank centre’s drop-in session held at St Leonard’s Youth & Community Centre in Bootle every Friday morning.

”These sessions are being accessed by a number of people who have not attended a stop smoking service before, and may not be able to make another journey out to a clinic at a separate time either.

“We also understand that some of those who attend a foodbank centre may not feel ready to address their smoking habit straight away, so we are also including information about the service within the food parcels, which people can keep hold of and access at a later date.”

Sefton’s NHS Stop Smoking Service claims to have helped thousands of local residents quit smoking since it started in 2001.
