Teenage fencing ace wins his first senior medal
by Henry James

FENCING ace Richard Michell has won his first senior medal - at the age of 15!

The talented teenager, a pupil at Scarisbrick Hall school, showed skills beyond his years to earn a bronze medal at the Lancaster Open, knocking out the number one seed in en route!

After an indifferent display in the seeding fights, Richard was ranked only 16th going into the first round where he was paired with Stockport's Daniel Alexander.

But although Alexander had come out on top in their seeding clash, Richard was able to get ahead and stay there to clinch his place in the second round.

There he was drawn to face top seed Chris Anwyl - but proceeded to shock everyone by knocking him out of the tournament!

After that he had a solid run to the semi-finals where he finally went down fighting 15-10 to Chris Heaps, a former North West champion.

His headteacher, Mr Shaw said: “We are delighted with the success Richard has had. He is an excellent student who has demonstrated what drive, determination and talent can achieve.

”He is a real inspiration to all of our students and is also on track to achieve an excellent set of GSCE results in August.“

Meanwhile, Richard, is very grateful for the sponsorship he has received from Adrian Shandley of Premier Wealth Management and for the West Lancashire talented athlete award which provided his equipment.

Although he is now too old for the Leon Paul, he will be returning to the British selection circuit with renewed determination to win his national colours and be selected for the cadet team.
