County's helping hand for fencing ace Richard
by Guest

A YOUNG fencer from Ormskirk has received financial support from Lancashire County Council to help him achieve his dream of selection for the Great Britain Cadet Team.

Sixteen-year-old Richard Michell, who is the North West under-16 epée champion, has received funding of £750 from County Councillor Kim Snape, Lancashire's Champion for Young People.

It will go towards private coaching for Richard during the international selection season, as well maintenance of his fencing equipment and help towards the cost of attending tournaments.

Cllr. Snape said: “The cost of travelling to tournaments across the country, as well as equipment and training costs, can be very high and is mostly met by parents. So we're pleased that the county council has been able to help Richard.

”It takes dedication and hard work to succeed in any sport – which are both qualities to be proud of. We wish Richard all the best in his upcoming competitions.“

Richard's dad, Paul, added: ”This kind of financial assistance really can have a significant impact on the quality of support a young athlete will receive, giving them the best chance of success on the national stage.

“Even though we try to keep our costs low, it's still quite expensive for Richard to take part in these competitions, especially when they're in different places. We'd like to thank everyone who helps to support Richard with his fencing.”
