Kenny meets charity walkers
by Tom Martin

LIVERPOOL legend Kenny Dalglish teamed up with more than 1,400 locals who all took part in a fundraising walk across the new link road between Thornton and Switch Island.

The former striker, known fondly to Reds fans as ‘King Kenny', didn't take part himself but did sign autographs and pose for pictures with those in attendance.

The event was held on Saturday, May 16 and was a chance for interested residents to get a first glimpse of the soon-to-be opened road which cost £19.5 million to build.

Construction firm Balfour Beatty helped organise the walk which was in support of Thornton-based Jospice, with anyone taking part asked to donate £5.

People of all ages showed up in the windy conditions to make their way across the road, the youngest of which was a seven hour-old baby who was joined by her family.

Newly appointed MP for Sefton Central, Bill Esterson, was also in attendance to show his support.

Pat Murphy, from Jospice, said: “We had huge interest in this event, and we were delighted that Balfour Beatty allowed us the use of the road while construction work is still in operation.

”Thank you to everyone who came along to support us, and made there £5 donation. Many people were so generous and made extra donations. A big thank you must go to all our volunteers on the day and our sponsor Ascot Properties“.
