We love our new name say regulars!
by Tom Martin

OWNERS of a recently opened pub in Seaforth claim they have been met with nothing but positive feedback since arriving in the town – despite its controversial name causing a stir with some residents.

The Cock and Seaman, on Rawson Road, started serving pints for the first time on Friday, May 22 and so far it has proven to be a big hit with locals pouring through the door.

A company called AtWill Pubs decided to take over the derelict building, which used to be The Doric pub, and created a stir not only locally but also nationally with the choice of name making headlines across the country.

But one of the owners, Ed Atkinson, stands by the name and told the Champion that his new customers only have positive words to say about it.

He said: “I've spoken to locals about the name and it's all been positive. I think people appreciate the humour behind the name and realise that the most important thing is that we have brought back a community asset back into community use. The pub could have fallen into a state of disrepair but we took it over and I think people appreciate that fact.”

AtWill Pubs, which was set up four years ago, is run by Liverpudlians Ed and his colleague Fred Williams, with the pair claiming that The Cock and Seaman is a reference to the area.

Since 2011 they have bought a number of pubs across the country with the names of each one reflecting a unique feature of the town.

Some of the other pubs they own are The Cocked Hat, in Stockport, which is a nod towards the area's well-known hat making history and The Cock in Swine, in Swinton, which is a reference to a former pig farm being located in the area hundreds of years ago.

The decision to call the rebranded Seaforth pub The Cock and Seaman is apparently down to the location of the nearby docks and the naval history of Liverpool.

Ed added: “The pub is fantastic and I'm really happy with how it has been so far. The opening was great and we had a lot of people through the door. We offered the first ten people a free drink – so maybe that's why they were filing in so fast!

”It was a really good atmosphere and most went for the cask ales which are popular.

“We've completely renovated the pub and we have a new fire place, decorated, new tills, new televisions, a new music system. It looks completely different. There is also a function room for christenings and other events which we can offer.”
