Accountancy student prepares for leading apprenticeship
by Tom Martin

A FORMER Crosby student believes university isn't for everyone after he marked the end of his A-Level studies by getting an apprenticeship with one of the largest accountancy networks in the world.

Harry Williams, who lives in Birkdale, has been selected to join the BDO International School Leavers Scheme which starts later this month.

The youngster believes find an apprenticeship scheme can hold many benefits and he is looking forward to kickstarting his working life at the same time as many of his friends prepare to start life at university.

Harry, who achieved impressive A Level results with 2A* and 2A grades, was inspired by his sister Georgina, who was also a student at Merchant Taylors’.

She took an alternative route other than university and worked as a Legal Apprentice, earning and having her studies funded.

Harry researched and found firms offering various programmes in accounting before settling on BDO.

He said: “I am looking forward to working at BDO; I know that it will be hard but the opportunities offered are amazing. I will travel within the UK and could spend my third year abroad. My salary rises after two years and dramatically on qualification.

”As a 23 year old Chartered Accountant with five year’s work experience and no student debt, I could apply for numerous well paid and interesting positions within many fields of employment.“

Headteacher of Merchant Taylors' Boys' School, David Cook added: ”We are very proud of Harry. He went through a rigorous recruitment process which included other candidates at graduate level. I am sure he will progress well within the company and be work ready at a time when other students are only just graduating“.
