Hillside pupils emerge victorious as robotic machines do battle
by Tom Martin

A GROUP of pupils have won a Robot Wars-inspired competition which saw them create their own fighting machine and face off against other entries from across Merseyside.

Harry Naylor, Sam Zhen, Logan Burke and Joseph Leatherbarrow from Hillside High School have been crowned the Merseyside Champions in the MerseyStem's Robotic Challenge after coming out on top of the recent event.

The competition involved the different teams building their robots in the morning and pitting them against each other in the afternoon in a series of matches.

Hillside first had to come through the Sefton heats before heading to the grand final to face seven schools from across Merseyside, but the challenge did not faze the children who came away with the winners' trophy.

They had to create a ‘Vex Protobot system’ to ensure it was capable of picking up objects but to also fight off the robots from other teams.

Due to their victory, the Hillside High School pupils will now attend the ‘Big Bang North West’ at Liverpool’s Exhibition Centre in July where they will face competition from schools across the region.

Amanda Ryan, principal at Hillside High School said: “We are delighted to be Merseyside Champions, a true reflection of the ability and skills of the students here at Hillside. It was a fantastic day for everyone involved and MerseySTEM had delivered an energetic and exciting day that allowed pupils an insight into the world of engineering and robotics.

”Harry, Sam, Joseph and Logan worked collaboratively to piece together their robot, and deciding on the best design to ensure the competition ran smoothly, they didn’t want a repeat of the Sefton final where their robot’s wheel fell off!

“We are so proud of our students’ achievements in this competition. They worked hard all day and showed great skill and determination. We are looking forward to using the robot they won to inspire more students to try their hand at robotics”.
