A NEW ‘coastal school’ will be created for children so they can get out the classroom and study Crosby beach.

The project, which has been made possible due to a £7,160 grant from national education charity the Ernest Cook Trust, will enable pupils to explore the coastline.

A group of 12 local primary schools, led by Great Crosby Catholic Primary School, will make use of the nearby coastline as an educational resource.

This idea of a coastal school is similar in concept to increasingly popular forest school sessions for teaching children about nature and the countryside.

A spokesperson for Ernest Cook Trust said: “In an urban environment like Liverpool, these areas of coastal landscape present a welcome resource and a natural learning arena.

”Despite our proximity to this area of natural beauty, many of our pupils have never had the opportunity to learn about or truly explore our beautiful coastline.“

The grant will allow the schools to train three members of staff as ‘coastal school practitioners’, and to buy equipment and materials such as cameras and ‘beach kits’.

The grant donor, Ernest Cook Trust, is one of the UK's leading educational charities, and is rooted in the conservation and management of the countryside.

It owns and manages 22,000 acres of landed estates across five counties in England.
