Aughton man finds message in a bottle
by Henry James

MIKE Ingman got more than he bargained for when he went for a post-Christmas stroll along the beach after stumbling across a message in a bottle!

The 37-year-old from Aughton made his discovery on the beach at Aberdaron - about 15 miles west of Pwhelli in Gwynedd on the North Wales coast - while walking his dog on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 29.

Spotting the bottle washed up in the strong surf on the beach, Mike was amazed to find the message inside written by a man called Craig Drover.

The bottle had been launched from a boat called the Artic Eagle fishing in the waters off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada on May 20 before washing up more than 2,000 miles and nearly seven months later in Wales.

Mike said: “I was amazed when I found the bottle while walking my dog on a visit to Wales.

”I have been working on offshore wind farms in the area for the last few years so I am quite familiar with it.

“The bottle had been washed up on the beach by the strong surf at Aberdaron.”

The message from Craig included the co-ordinates of where the boat was when the bottle was placed in the ocean and also said he would like the bottle back - although adding that the finder was quite welcome to keep the message as a souvenir!

Mike wrote about his discovery on social network website Facebook and soon had thousands of responses from people offering to help him trace Craig.

Mike added: “I have returned the bottle to Craig and I am keeping the original note and he is sending me a frame to display it.

”I've been in touch with him via email and Facebook but not over the phone.

“He was very excited when I first contacted him as he sends a few bottles out each year and so far three have been found and returned including mine.”
