Dreams come true for disability football team
by Henry James

OFFICIALS at Skem Men-aces disability football team had always wished for their very own mini bus - and now they have one thanks to the help of a former mayor.

The team bought the vehicle after being given £12,000 from the past mayor of West Lancashire, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, after being chosen as one of her mayoral charities during her year of office.

Local motor dealers, 06 Vauxhall also gave them a “substantial discount” on the van and the team received their new vehicle on Saturday, January 30.

Carl Eaton, from the Men-aces said: “This has to be the most memorable and emotional occasion in the History of the Skem Men-aces.

”Over six years we have dreamt and wished that one day we would own our very own mini bus.

“After years of hard work and determination, today we finally took delivery of the bus.

”There are so many people to thank for this but I want to mention a few people in particular. Chris Wellington and all the gang from 06 Vauxhall, Skelmersdale. Thank you too to Phil Carver from 06 Vauxhall Ormskirk. Vauxhall have been incredible and I will never forget their kindness.

“We are grateful to Councillor Doreen Stephenson, who was the mayor of the borough from 2014 and 2015, and made us one of her chosen charities.

”Dan Curwen of Scott Rees & Co deserve a mention too as they have been sponsors of ours for several years.

“We also want to thank: Procter and Gamble; Sharon Roberts of Asda Skelmersdale for letting us do our monthly collections in store; Michael Riley who presented us with the bus; Eileen Mcloughlin for her fantastic fundraising efforts; John and Ruth Unsworth for their continued support; and Eddie Miller of Computers Direct NW LTD.

”Finally thank you to the totally awesome and amazing Skem community - quite simply without their unbelievable generosity today would not have been possible.“
