Concert overflowing with orchestral colour
by Henry James

THE Cornucopia, the Horn of Plenty, is a symbol of abundance and it's the title for CSO’s next concert, at St Faith's Great Crosby on Sunday, February14.

Holding a different kind of horn will be Chris Pople, principle French horn, and soloist in Mozart’s 2nd Horn Concerto and Concert Rondo.

Chris has been with CSO since 1997 and is busy with many other local orchestras and ensembles. He said: “I’ve found the horn to be a noble and beautiful, if somewhat unpredictable, companion for the best part of a lifetime.”

The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s famous Fingal’s Cave Overture. Inspired by a trip to see the cave, it depicts wild Atlantic seas, the cathedral-like cave and its desolate surroundings.

The grand finale is Berlioz’s tour de force, Symphonie Fantastique. If you like your music loud and colourful, this is for you! It's really a set of dramatic musical sketches of imaginary scenes, including a ball, a country scene with distant thunder, the macabre March to the Scaffold, all ending with a wild Witches’ Sabbath. Using a vast range of orchestral colour, Berlioz’s special effects would not be out of place in a film score for a thriller!

The concert is at St Faith’s Church on Crosby Road North at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available online at www.crosbysymphony.org.uk, from Pritchard’s Bookshop, HighNotes Music in Crosby and Harmonics Music, Write Blend Bookshop in Waterloo or at the door.
