Resident's anger over cropped shrubs
by Henry James

COUNCIL staff have been labelled “vandals” for cutting back shrubs in Wolverton, Skelmersdale.

Ron Webster has said the birds now have nowhere to nest after the workmen cut back the shrubs in his neighbourhood.

He said:  “Here at Wolverton, we have shrub borders, as does many other estates in Skelmersdale. Our shrubs were sawn to the stump last year It is 12 months on (now), and twigs were seen to grow on the stumps. Today, the same council gang has arrived and sawn off all the twigs, which took 12 months to grow, down to the stump again.

”Once again there is nowhere for the birds to nest and, nothing for the residents to look at.

“Why don't the council just remove the shrub stumps and save the tax payers the expense of employing these vandals? Or, at least find more beneficial work for the men to do?”

A council spokesman commented: “The council reduced these and other shrubs significantly in 2015 to remove dead and decaying wood, in-order to promote new growth.

”This current pruning season the teams responsible are back to the regular pattern of pruning to help keep these shrubs healthy.

“The council can in certain cases leave some shrubs to grow taller. Requests to do this are considered on an individual bases and this will be looked into in advance of next year’s pruning works.

”In addition during any pruning works care has to be taken to ensure there is no encroachment of pedestrianised footways and or any car parking bays.“
