  • Joe hoping to become cream of crop at National Apprenticeship Awards

    Henry James

JOE Buck, an ambitious apprentice working at Toby Carvery in Aintree is hoping to receive the top prize at the National Apprenticeship Awards after being named the Lloyd’s Banking Group North West ‘Rising Star’ at the regional finals.

The award is aimed at recognising young apprentices who have made impressive progress in their career to date and have the potential to go even further. The nominees are judged by an independent regional panel from which a final national winner will be decided by public vote.

Taking on three apprenticeships in three years at Toby Carvery, on the A59, Joe is seizing the moment to become the cream of the crop. Completing both Level 2 Hospitality Services and Level 2 Team Leader apprenticeships, Joe has gained experience across every aspect of the business.

Continuing to create the recipe for success Joe will also complete the Level 3 Hospitality Supervisor (Food & Beverage) course this year, equivalent to an A-Level qualification.

James Birkett, Joe’s regional trainer from Lifetime Training commented: “I first met Joe in October 2015 as an enthusiastic though shy 17-year-old and signed him onto the Mitchells & Butlers Hospitality Services apprenticeship in Toby Carvery. Working from Apprentice through to Duty Manager across three years alongside his studies is testament to Joe’s fantastic determination, passion and dedication.”

Joe is keen to develop his role at Toby Carvery even further and this award is just the beginning. He said: “Next year I’m hoping to become an assistant manager and also gain experience as a kitchen manager. Following that I’ve set my sights on general manager and hopefully a corporate role in the future!”

Seen as an invaluable member of the team by Graham Holton, Joe’s area manager, he said: “Joe is a huge asset for Toby Carvery and I have no doubt that he can progress to general manager and beyond! Joe has proved his capabilities within the company and is a great support for the whole team.”

Winning the North West ‘Rising Star’ award means that Joe has secured his spot in the final of the National Apprenticeship Awards, to be held in November. Graham Holton added, “Everybody at Toby Carvery and Mitchells & Butlers wishes him the best of luck.”
