Quartet find time out of world tour to perform in borough
PARBOLD Douglas Music is delighted to present Chiaroscuro Quartet, with violinist, Alina Ibragimova, internationally recognised for performances that are intense, refined, exploratory and poised.
The quartet will perform in the Auditorium in the Village Hall WN8 7DN on Saturday, January 26 at 7.45 p.m.
Formed in 2005, the Chiaroscuro Quartet comprises violinists Alina Ibragimova (Russia) and Pablo Hernán Benedí (Spain), the Swedish violist Emilie Hörnlund and cellist Claire Thirion from France. The Quartet is one of today’s most respected period-instrument chamber groups, famed for its fiery, unforgettable performances of galvanising energy. Dubbed ‘a trailblazer for the authentic performance of classical chamber music’ in Gramophone, this international ensemble performs music of the Classical and early Romantic periods on gut strings and with historical bows.
The Chiaroscuro’s’s unique sound – has been described in The Observer as ‘a shock to the ears of the best kind’.
The Chiaroscuros usually perform standing up - Claire Thirion plays her cello Baroque-style, without a spike which adds to the fluidity of their playing, and also enables Alina Ibragimova in particular to address the audience directly instead of side-on.
Reviews of their concerts talk of the dramatic tension and passions in the music being notched up, revealing the high spirits, dynamism and daring in the works.
Chiaroscuro Quartet are on a global tour and as well as Parbold will perform in various concerts in the UK, including Wigmore Hall, Southampton and Bristol and will visit venues around the world including Japan, China, Madrid, Vienna, Washington DC, New York, Montreal and Vancouver.

The Parbold programme is the same as their global tour. It begins with early works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn and ends with Schubert’s famed ‘Death and the Maiden’ quartet.
In November 2018 the Chiaroscuro released a highly praised recording of this work and it was awarded ‘recording of the week’ by BBC’s Andrew Macgregor for its ‘stark, dramatic, fiercely uncompromising and fine playing’. The quartet’s unique sound is highly acclaimed by audiences and critics all over Europe and they will provide an evening of exceptional music not to be missed.
