Marine FC’s 125 year history charted in new book
MARINE FC's 125 year history can be read in a new book published by a lifelong fan.
Barry Lenton has researched the Crosby club's past and fellow supporters will be able to find out how the Mariners were formed in 1894 and competed in the I-Zingari League, through to their present day membership of the Northern Premier League.
The A4 book contains more than 350 pages of editorial and photographs covering the 125 year history of Marine season by season.
It will be handed over to Marine at the end of June in readiness for the official 125th anniversary launch night in July at the Marine Travel Arena.
The file conversions are to be carried out by Marine fan Neil McAdam and the book is to be printed by The Printroom based in Bootle which has had a long association with Marine.
Marine chairman Paul Leary said: “This is an inspirational compilation by Barry of the history of our famous football club.
“He has spent over 1,500 hours to capture and portray our history in such a special way.
“It is an absolutely fascinating portrayal of the people who have looked after, and supported Marine through the 125 years since the club was formed in 1894.
“The book, with over 500 photographs and over 50,000 words, covers the many successes of Marine over the decades and sensitively writes about the people, supporters and sponsors who worked so hard to make that happen.
“It is an incredibly, meticulously prepared historical record of Marine that provides some material and information never seen before and is a must read for anyone who has or has had an interest in Marine or in non-league in general.
“I know that Barry will be so proud to see his efforts come to fruition with the publication of the book in June and I have no doubt that readers will enjoy such a fabulous compilation of our history”
Barry added: “When Paul Leary asked me in September 2017 to consider producing a book to celebrate Marine’s 125th season, I remember saying to him that I would be lucky to produce 100 pages but it soon became apparent that there was more to the club’s history than Marine supporters could have imagined.
“Apart from photographs, it consists of statistics, league tables and major events for every season since 1894, programme covers, tickets, posters, press reports, and anecdotes. I think our fans will love it.”
