ONE of the servicemen being held by the Iranian authorities is from Southport, it was revealed this week.

Paul Barton, aged 21, is thought to be among the 14 men and one woman of the Royal Navy who were seized on Friday, after it was claimed they illegally entered Iranian waters.

Sefton’s Mayor Councillor Tommy Mann, who lives in Southport, this week sent his thoughts to the family. He said: “There is great concern surrounding these service people and their well-being.

“They and their families are all in our thoughts at this time, and I hope the government can secure their release as soon as possible.”

The former Birkdale High School pupil is thought to be fit and well.

The group was seized after they were accused of entering Iranian waters. But Downing Street said the UK may release evidence proving the group were in fact in Iraqui waters.

The 15 servicepeople, who were on a dinghy-type boat away from mother ship HMS Cornwall, could now face legal action. They are being held by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the Iranian capital Tehran.

A similar incident happened in 2004 when eight servicemen were arrested for straying over the border in Iran. They were released after three days, and were paraded blindfolded on television and publicly mocked.
