SOUTHPORT can now boast two Dan Dare statues.
The two busts are currently being stored at Atkinson Art Gallery in Lord Street. A second statue was made for an exhibition, which is due to go on display at the Botanic Gardens Museum. The "real" Dan will be put in Wayfarers Arcade.
Dan Dare is a prominent figure in Southport history. He is a comic-book hero beloved of millions who appeared first in the best-selling Eagle comic, produced in the 1950s, before being revived in the 1970s and 80s.
Also known as the Pilot of the Future, Dare is famous for his battles with green-skinned villain the Mekon.
The character was created by Frank Hampson, who was born in Tameside, Manchester, but moved to Southport as a young boy. His sister Margaret is still believed to live in the town.
Eagle Club member and local councillor David Tattersall, explained: “Eagle was a top selling magazine and was produced by a Birkdale vicar called Marcus Morris.
"His objective was to bring out a magazine with great strips and very high quality. The Eagle was a sensational success. The artwork was done in a small shed in Churchtown, which is still there today in Botanic Road.
“Dan Dare is a massive part of the town’s history. Everyone who knows about the Pilot of The Future should be able to see the bust in Wayfarers and share their memories.”
Another fan, Cllr David Pearson, said: “I couldn’t believe how similar it was to the original, I had to ask which one is which?”
The Atkinson art gallery in Southport held a Dan Dare Exhibition in the 90s that was a great success. Some of the exhibits are still on display at the gallery.
